Xiaomi has stepped up its rivalry with Tesla by unveiling its first electric vehicle, the SU7 Sedan, in China at an impressive price. CEO Lei Jun directly compared it to the Tesla Model 3 during a live stream.

The car will hit the Chinese market in May. Jun stated during the launch that Xiaomi plans to invest heavily in core technologies and aims to become one of the top five global automakers within 15 to 20 years.

The comparison was made because Tesla’s Model 3, China’s top-selling new energy sedan, offers a driving range of over 600 kilometers (372 miles) and is priced below 500,000 yuan, as reported by industry website Autohome.

Comparison between Xiaomi SU7 Sedan and Tesla Model 3: Pricing

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated that the entry-level SU7 model, equipped with a 73.6 kWh battery providing a 700-kilometer range, would be sold at 215,900 yuan (about Rs 25 lakhs) in China, even though each vehicle would be sold at a loss.

In contrast, Tesla’s Model 3 begins at 245,900 yuan (approximately Rs 28.3 lakhs) in China.

Specifications of the Xiaomi SU7 Sedan

The Xiaomi SU7 sedan impresses with its performance, boasting acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h. Its dual motors deliver 637 horsepower and 838 Nm of peak turbo, with an 800-volt architecture akin to Tesla’s Cybertruck. Xiaomi promises a range of 700 to 900 kilometers, depending on the chosen trim.

Measuring five meters in length, two meters in width, and featuring a three-meter wheelbase, the SU7 stands out with an elegant and low stance, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.195, the best in its class. Initially revealed with three color options during MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Xiaomi has now expanded the palette to nine shades.

Design highlights include water-drop headlights, halo tail lights, an active rear spoiler, flowing curves, and concealed door handles. Powered by Xiaomi’s Hyper OS, the SU7 seamlessly integrates with Xiaomi’s ecosystem, including phones, tablets, home gadgets, and electric vehicles. The interior features a wraparound cockpit with multiple screens, advanced driver assistance systems, and other high-tech features.
