PM-elect Keir Starmer vows to restore politics as public service; Nigel Farage praises ‘establishment revolt’ post-election gains
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted defeat in the July 5 national election, declaring the Labour Party’s victory.
Keir Starmer, Britain’s Prime Minister-elect, promised a “national renewal” following Labour’s victory over the ruling Conservatives, initiating the mission to rebuild the country in a triumphant speech in London.
While thousands of electoral staff counted millions of ballot papers nationwide, the Conservatives faced the shock of a historic defeat, leaving the party in disarray and likely triggering a leadership contest to replace Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Parliamentary Seat Projections and Party Wins:
The country’s first British Indian-origin prime minister secured his Richmond and Northallerton seat in northern England with 23,059 votes but couldn’t reverse his party’s national fortunes after 14 years in government.
A sombre Rishi Sunak, accompanied by his wife Akshata Murty, faced the outcome of his parliamentary future and used his acceptance speech to concede his party’s defeat in securing another government term, acknowledging the Labour Party’s victory and congratulating Sir Keir Starmer.
“Today, the peaceful and orderly transfer of power, marked by goodwill from all sides, should instill confidence in our country’s stability and future,” he remarked.
“There is much to learn and contemplate,” he added.
Apologizing for the defeat, he told voters, “I am sorry.”
With notable figures like Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt losing their seats, the election results are being labeled a “bloodbath” for the Conservatives.
In contrast, Labour’s Starmer is poised to assume leadership at 10 Downing Street as Britain’s new Prime Minister, having comfortably secured his seat in Holborn and St. Pancras, London.
“The change begins right here. This is your democracy, your community, and your future. You have voted. Now it is time for us to deliver,” said Starmer in his victory speech, surrounded by jubilant supporters.
While the initial election night exit poll predicted 410 seats for the Opposition party, the evolving trends and results are now indicating around 405 seats, with the Tories reduced to 154. The Liberal Democrats are also among the big winners of this election, expected to secure approximately 56 seats in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Scottish National Party (SNP), campaigning for Scottish independence, is losing seats to Labour.
A significant development in this election is Nigel Farage finally winning a seat as an MP on his eighth attempt, leading his anti-immigration Reform UK party to secure three seats in the Commons.
